I've seen Fly-back/Recirculation diodes used to prevent the reverse polarity and voltage spikes associated with introduction of inductors in a circuit. Those along with Thyristors would be sufficient, not sure if any of the above quoted would even address the reverse polarity aspect.

In power electronics that jobs is done by snubbers. Can be RC, diode, resistor, or more complicated combinations.
